Car-pooling: Simple virtues of sharing a ride

In the midst of the second world war, the US government warned: “When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler.” The 1943 propaganda poster by Weimer Pursell urged Americans to car-pool to conserve petrol. In 2002, Bill Maher, the politically opinionated comedian revived the poster – and the theme – in a book he called: When You Ride Alone You Ride With Bin Laden.

His timing was auspicious. Since 2002 oil prices have risen dramatically, reaching a record of $147 a barrel in July – 15 times what it was a decade before. As oil prices rose because supply was unable to keep up with booming demand from China and elsewhere, petrol prices followed. Costs grew so dramatically that European truckers organised mass strikes, American drivers abandoned their petrol-guzzling sports utility vehicles, and car pooling began to stage a comeback (leggi tutto ...)

Dell Employees Drive the Green Message through Car Pooling Website
Dublin, November 4, 2008

Today marked the official launch of the Dell Car Pooling website in Cherrywood. The website was the idea of Dell employee, Alexandre Mitel, who entered an internal competition organised by the employee led ‘Green Team’.

The website was deemed such a good idea the ‘Green Team’ went about implementing and designing the website in partnership with the Dublin Transportation Office. The Car Pooling Website was customised solely for Dell, it has been tried and tested and incentives for employees are in place to encourage them to use it. A monthly raffle for a car valet is up for the taking and the option to secure preferred car parking spaces.

Negli Stati Uniti, Zipcar, leader per il car sharing e Zimride, principale player per il carpooling hanno lanciato un’iniziativa comune finalizzata a mettere a fattore comune i rispettivi punti di forza. Cosa li unisce? La piattaforma web come ambiente di incontro, condivisione e scambio. Bella idea!
